Heidi Klum was conceived in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, in June of 1973. Erna Klum was her mother. Her father Gunther Klum worked as an executive of a cosmetics firm. Heidi's dad used to be the producer of 4711, which was a fragrance company. Heidi grew within Bergisch Gladbach which is a town with a population of 70,000, just 6 miles to the east of Cologne. Karin, a friend of Klum's at the time (18-year-old) student encouraged Klum to participate in an German television talent show named Model 92. This German magazine Petra sponsored talent show was a part of Thomas Gottschalk's late night talk show. Klum competed against 25,000 other contestants across Germany, Europe and beyond until she made it to third place. Then, in April 1992, Klum won a top model prize worth $300,000.
